In this full day workshop students will explore how colour works in relation to  its neighbors on the colour wheel. We will paint our way through true primary , secondary and tertiary colours along with homogeneous, analogous and complimentary colours. Along the way we will gain some language about colour from hue, warm , cool,   tint, tone, intensity , simultaneous contrast, luminosity and what each colours value is on the grey scale.   We will also look at Colour Theorists, Itten, Munsell,  and Goethe. This is a hands on workshop where you may use the paint you already have to create useful colour wheels and value scales that help you further understand what your chosen palette can do .

If you are wanting to explore colour theory in its truest sense then using gouache** is the best medium to be working in  as it dries  quickly, matte (with no sheen) , is opaque, and does not flake. Turner and Pebeo are great brands, Reeves is very inexpensive but does flake. We want paint to be ideally opaque and matte so  the hue won’t be influenced by the surface or by the shininess of the paint.   **Colour theory can be done in  any paint medium; watercolour, oil, tempera,  and acrylic; however all of them have their own challenges. Watercolour should not have the use of white as the paper acts as the white and paint is transparent but does dry quickly. Oil paint takes a  long time to dry and can act quite transparently  with a sheen and turns muddy quickly. Also more brushes are needed as clean up is challenging . Acrylic comes in many brands  that  varies in sheen,  transparency and opacity along with “open paints” that are sticky and take a really long time to dry.  Tempera of a low quality will mix unevenly with a gritty nature and can flake off after it dries.

Materials list:
several sheets of 140lb (minimum) heavy flat paper, or mixed media pad, to do many paint tests, colour swatches and value strips
A ruler 12″, a compass
2H or HB pencil
Palette that can hold many colours at once (round plastic ones with 6-8-10 wells are great)
#2, #4, talkyon round tipped brush and or #4, #6 talkyon flat tipped brush – it makes a smoother surface than hogs hair brushes
2-3 Water containers
The colours needed for this workshop are: (titanium) white, (ivory) black , primary yellow, primary red/magenta, primary blue/cyan. If true primaries are unavailable then owning cadmium red medium, magenta, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow medium, ultramarine blue, pthalo blue or cyan are your best options . If using watercolour paint you do not need a white.

Lauren McKinley RenzettiInstructor: Lauren McKinley Renzetti is a mixed media artist, specializing in abstraction of the world around her through printmaking,  collage and acrylic paint. She received a combined Honors Art and Theatre degree from McMaster University in 1995. Lauren has been teaching art for over twenty years with all ages. She has worked at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ryerson University, Art Works Art School and been the Artist-in-Residence at Unicamp of Ontario. She currently teaches at the AGO, Art For Cancer and is the curator of Neighborhood Galleries in the Beaches.  Lauren shows her work widely and takes part in many group and solo shows in Southern Ontario, Brooklyn and Bulgaria.
